But some rivalries, some contests always seem to stand out, irrespective of the stage, unmindful of the odds, the stakes involved. Manchester United, regarded as one of the greatest football clubs in the world, has developed some historic football rivalries over the years, some owing to its grand success, some to sheer competition and some to its geographical location.

One such contest, United against Liverpool, stands tall and firm as one of the grandest football rivalries ever to grace the game.
Together, the two clubs share a whopping 118 trophies including 37 top flight titles. Liverpool’s title drought since the beginning of the Premier League era meant that United slowly but steadily bridged the huge gap and overtook the Reds last season with a record breaking 19th league triumph which lead to widespread celebrations among the United fans, who after years of being demeaned an mocked owing to their club’s less glamorous trophy cabinet, declared to the Reds .
The Reds meanwhile, still have the bragging rights when it comes to European success and United still have some catching up to do. Their inability to withstand Barcelona in Europe means that they still trail the Merseysiders by 3 titles. United’s European record in recent years has been very impressive, making the finals 3 out of 4 times in the last 4 editions, but they have failed to get past the final hurdle on the last 2 occasions, falling prey to Barcelona’s superlative brand of football. Liverpool, on the other hand, have little to show for the last 20 years, with their superb victory in ’05 final in Istanbul being a silver lining.
